About this tool
The Rental Housing Nowcast shows the rental market by rent price range, split by type of housing: multifamily buildings, single-family homes, small 2-4 unit buildings, and mobile or manufactured homes. It also shows the population and demographics of the people who rent in each type. This helps users see where rents sit and who lives in each part of the rental market.

Questions it answers
- What share of rental housing in my area is multifamily versus single-family?
- How are rents distributed across price ranges in my county or metro area?
- Who lives in single-family rentals compared with apartment buildings?
- How much of the rental stock is mobile or manufactured homes?
- How do rent levels compare between my state and the nation?
Limits
- Rents are estimates: Census survey rents are rolled forward using the Zillow Rent Index to approximate current conditions.
- Households paying no cash rent or very low rents are left out of the rent price ranges and the totals.
- National totals can differ depending on whether they are built from counties or from Census PUMA areas; the PUMA-based national figure includes every renter, while the county-based figure leaves out renters in areas not assigned to a county.
