About this tool
This chart estimates the U.S. housing shortage for the nation, states, counties and cities, assuming a nationwide shortage of about 6 million homes. The national total is divided among areas based on how far each area's typical home price exceeds three times typical income, with a larger share going to areas where that gap is widest. It helps show where shortages are likely concentrated.

Questions it answers
- Is there a housing shortage in my state, county or city?
- Which states and counties have the largest estimated housing shortages?
- How large is the estimated shortage in my area compared with the number of homes it already has?
- How are 6 million missing homes spread across the country?
- Where would adding homes matter most?
Limits
- The figures are estimates built on an assumed national shortage of about 6 million homes, not a direct count of missing homes.
- Local shortages are allocated using the ratio of median home price to median income, so areas with higher ratios receive larger shares.
- Puerto Rico is not included.
