About this tool
This map estimates how many homes could be built if housing were allowed by right in commercial, industrial and mixed-use zones. It shows these zones, called Livable Urban Villages cores, along with estimates of additional homes. This matters because it points to places where a zoning reform could add housing without rezoning residential neighborhoods.
- Shows
- Estimated additional homes that could be built if residential use were allowed by right in commercial, industrial and mixed-use zones, shown by zone and by jurisdiction, with areas within an eighth mile and a quarter mile of those zones.
Questions it answers
- Where are the commercial, industrial and mixed-use zones where housing could be allowed by right?
- How many additional homes could my city or county gain if housing were allowed in these zones?
- Which zones have the most potential for new homes?
- How much housing potential lies within an eighth or quarter mile of these zones?
- How does my jurisdiction compare with similar peer jurisdictions?
Limits
- Figures are estimates of potential homes, not forecasts of what will be built.
- Special and planned zones count only where the surrounding block has at least 2 jobs per acre.
- Very large cores of 200 acres or more are excluded.
