Home Price Appreciation and Wage Index

More in: How affordable is housing here?

About this tool

This chart compares how home prices and wages have changed over time in the 60 largest metro areas, in each state, and nationally. Both are indexed to December 2019 = 100, so a visitor can see whether home prices have grown faster or slower than wages. That gap helps show how affordability has shifted.

Shows
Home price appreciation and wage index series for the top 60 metros, each state, and a national series, both rebased so December 2019 equals 100.

Questions it answers

  • Have home prices in my metro grown faster than wages since December 2019?
  • How does home price growth in my state compare with wage growth?
  • Which of the largest metros have seen the widest gap between home price and wage growth?
  • How do my metro's home prices and wages compare with the national trend?
  • Is housing becoming less affordable relative to local incomes where I live?

Limits

  • Metro coverage is limited to the 60 largest metros.
  • Both series are indexed to December 2019 = 100, so they show change relative to that month, not dollar levels.
  • Wages are reported quarterly, so each wage value is repeated across the three months of its quarter when compared with monthly home prices.
