About this tool
This interactive map grades 73 manufacturing sites from A to F on how ready the surrounding area is to house their workers. Each factory is scored on nearby housing, metro growth, economic pressure and amenities, so users can see where large job projects face housing constraints and where reforms could help.
- Shows
- A map of 73 factories, each shown as a circle sized by job count and colored by overall housing grade, with state-level grades, industry comparisons, a quadrant chart of affordability versus opportunity, and projected grade improvements if housing reforms were adopted.
- Places
- States
Questions it answers
- How well prepared is the housing market around a specific factory for its workers?
- Which of the largest factory projects are in the weakest housing markets?
- How do housing grades differ across manufacturing industries?
- Which factories could see their grade improve if housing reforms were adopted?
- Which states have factories with the highest or lowest housing readiness grades?
Limits
- Overall grade is an unweighted average of four criteria grades; a factory with two or more F grades receives an overall F.
- Covers only 73 manufacturing sites, not all factories.
- Some factories are grouped together where their areas overlap.
- Projected grade improvements for 26 factories assume states and localities adopt the Playbook reforms.
